Gov. Makinde reopens Shasha market

Governor Makinde, however, stated that the Iroko market, where the crisis originated from remains closed.

Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde has lifted the curfew imposed on Shasha market in Ibadan.

The market was shut down indefinitely by Mr. Makinde last week after a cobbler was stabbed to death by a cart pusher resulting in ethnic clashes with stalls burnt and properties worth millions blazed.

In a bid to forestall further clashes in the community the governor imposed a dusk to dawn curfew spanning from 6 pm to 7 am daily.

However, a statement by @seyiamakinde, the official Twitter page of the governor, appealed to Hausa and Yoruba residents of the community to return to their previous amicable relationship.

Mr. Makinde, however, stated that the Iroko market, where the crisis originated from remains closed.

“We met with the leaders and stakeholders of the Sasa community. After listening to them and considering the economic implications, I directed that the market be reopened except the Iroko market where the crisis originated from which is to remain closed,” the statement by Governor Makinde read.

It added: “I appealed to both ethnic groups to restore their previous amicable relationship. I also directed that the market be cleared of all debris, solar street lights installed to ensure the market environment is well-lit and palliatives distributed to the affected traders.”

In the aftermath of the clash, Mr. Makinde disclosed that his administration will constitute a judicial panel over the clash.

Also, Kano state Governor donated the sum of N100,000 each to 185 indigenes of the state who were victims of the ethnic clash.
